Standoff Technique versus Resistance Method:  Left, sharp objects and thorns are stood-off by 7 - 9 mm layer.  Right, a resistive layer attempts to prevent sharp objects from penetrating.

 

 

Two basic concepts to prevent inner-tube puncture on pneumatic tires are standoff and resistance.  Other preventive measures include self-sealing inner tubes.
